Stroke: What should I know?
A stroke happens due to reduced blood supply to the brain. Ensure you take medicines on time, and do regular physiotherapy which goes a long way in recovery which happens over months. Stroke can recur in spite of medications in rare cases. Common symptoms may be remembered with the acronym FAST ( F Facial deviation, A-Arm weakness, S Speech slurring, T Time to rush to hospital ) for early detection. If any one or more are seen, please visit the nearest neuro center equipped with a 24-hour CT/preferably an MRI and a neurologist, ASAP. The golden hour for emergent medication remains 4.5 hrs. Please do not waste time in getting the MRI/CT brain or waiting for the symptoms to subside spontaneously. In every minute of acute stroke, one loses millions of neurons. So time is the brain. Do not stop the blood thinners advised to you for any procedure, dental or surgical, under any circumstances without the neurologist’s clearance.
